Intimacy

Intimacy

Depending on where you are in your relationship, having an ostomy can be scary. Individuals in an established relationship usually have fewer concerns with intimacy. Individuals who are single and dating or in a new relationship may experience hesitancy in dating. Your ostomy nurse is an excellent resource for discussing your relationship concerns.

Recommendations:

  • If new to dating, perhaps not the first thing to mention on a date.
  • Assess whether you like the person and want to establish a relationship with them before sharing that you have an ostomy.
  • If they can't accept you for having an ostomy, they most likely are not the right person for you.
  • When being intimate, some ostomates like to wear coverups or wraps if you want a wrap (lace or plain) to feel sexy or prevent the pouch from moving – see clothing for ideas.
