Ileostomy

It is essential to let your pharmacist know that you have an ileostomy. Some medicines are absorbed in the large intestine, and as your large intestine has either been removed or bypassed, it is necessary to re-evaluate your medications. Discuss with your family doctor and pharmacist if your medications need to be adjusted.

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, and stoma nurse if:

  • You notice that your medications are in your pouch.
  • If you are taking slow-release medications.
  • If you are taking stool softeners or laxatives.
  • If you are experiencing high output or very liquid output.
